Whilst the TV picks up the files it hasn't got the option of displaying the subtitles encoded into the videos. I am 99% certain that this is because the subtitles are sup files not srts. I was wondering if there was any way to get the subtitles play on the TV because otherwise I'd need to find a way to extrat the sup files, convert them and so on.

The only solution for my lg tv is to download .srt subtitles within emby (Opensubtitles) That's correct, currently the only way to play PGS subs is via burn-in, and this requires a powerful server, especially for 4K content. They're peak brightness for sure and the show is pretty dim at times, so the subtitles act like light bulbs, they light the room.
